Hummer Turfgrass Systems has a long history working with Penn State on the design and construction of high use natural grass sports fields.

Our working relationship dates back nearly 40 years and covers everything from new construction, small renovations to in-season emergency repairs. Projects include Beaver Stadium, Medlar Field (Home of Penn State Baseball and State College Spikes) Jeffrey Field, Lasch Football Practice Fields and Intermural Fields.

“I have been dealing with Hummer Turf since 1978. He has accomplished a number of jobs at PSU on our sports fields. He has always done an excellent job and because of this, we continue to use his services to produce high quality athletic fields.”

Beaver Stadium – 2024 Project

Hummer completed a field renovation at Beaver Stadium in 2024. The project began with mobilizing equipment and removing 1 ½” of existing grass using a Koro Sod Milling machine.

The field was then prepared with a turf tractor and box blade to level it, filling low areas with 80/20 USGA sand. It was vibratory aerated and carefully prepared around irrigation heads and edges.

Hummer installed 83,000 square feet of 1 ½” thick Tuckahoe Game Day sod using smooth rubber track sod installers, ensuring a flawless finish. A “Sidekick” machine, operated by a trained professional, was also used.

Finally, the field was seeded with PSU seed, applied twice with a Vredo disc seeder, to ensure a strong, resilient playing surface for the upcoming season.

Medlar Field – 2023 Project

Hummer recently completed a comprehensive field renovation, including the installation of a new irrigation system. The project began after establishing all finished elevations on the infield, warning track, and sand rootzone.

Laser-controlled grading equipment was used to achieve smooth transitions between surfaces. The infield and warning track were rolled for a consistent finish. Nutrients were incorporated into the rootzone, and the specified infield conditioner was applied.

Sod was then installed on the field and rolled to ensure a seamless and level finish.
